The lesson is taken from Genesis 11:1-9This story tells us why there are different languages in the world today. For before this happened everyone spoke the same language. But God in his wisdom decided that the people of earth needed to talk in different languages. Let's read and find out how it all came about.
Long ago the people traveled from the east and they found a plain. A plain is flat level ground. This plain was in the land of Shinar (Shi-nar), and the people settled there. Soon they begin to talk about building a city and building a tall tower. They knew how to make brunt bricks and they had tar for mortar to go between the bricks. They thought that by doing this they could make a name for their selves and they wouldn't be spread in all different directions upon the earth, they could stay together.
So they started to build a city and a tower. The tower top was to reach into heaven.
Now the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. But the Lord said, "Look, the people are as one, for they all speak the same language, and this is what they begin to do, now nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Let us go down and give them different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other."
In this way the Lord spread the people in different directions all over the earth. That ended the building of the city. That is why the city was called Babel. Because it was there that the Lord gave the people different languages so they couldn't understand what each other was saying, and the Lord sent the people in different direction all across the earth.
