Solomon Asks God for Wisdom

This lesson is taken from 1 Kings 3:9-13

Solomon asked God to give him a kind heart so he could rule over God's people and know the difference between right and wrong. For who would be able to rule over these great people of God's.

The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked this.

So God said to Solomon, “Since you have asked me for this and you didn't ask for a long life or wealth for yourself, and you didn't ask for the death of your enemies. But you asked for kindness in ruling with justice. I will do what you have asked me. I will give you a wise and kind heart, and there will never be anyone like you. But, I will also give you what you have not asked for. I will give you both riches and honor, so that in your lifetime, you will have no equal among kings.

Discussion:
Solomon was given a chance to have anything in the world. But, Solomon chose widsom, and a kind heart, in order to rule well and make the right choice.

We can ask God for wisdom as well. Also, notice that Solomon asked for a kind heart in order to be a good ruler. Solomon didn't ask God to do the job for him. We shouldn't ask God to do any jobs He has planned for us. Instead we should ask God to give us the wisdom to know what to do and to have the courage to start the job and finish the job that He wants us to do. We can ask God to help us to know how to do the job, but we are to do the job.

Solomon asked for wisdom, not for wealth. But God gave Solomon riches and a long life as well. But, God doesn't promise us riches, He will give us what we need. All we have to do is put God first, what He wants us to do first, and His principles first. When we set out to get rich, that only leads to waiting more and more. But, when you put God first you will be happy with what God gives you.

Solomon received his wisdom from God, but it was up to Solomon to use that wisdom in his life. We also have God's wisdom available to us. But we have to pray and ask God for wisdom. But, just like Solomon we must put whatever God gives us to use in our life.

Baby Moses

This lesson is taken from Exodus 1:9-2:10

Foreword:
Jacob had twelve sons.  Eleven of Jacob’s sons, with their families went with Jacob to live in Egypt.  For Jacob’s son Joseph was already living in Egypt.  But in time Jacob, his son Joseph, and all of Joseph’s brothers died.  But, their children had many children and grandchildren, and so forth on down the line.  The king who knew Joseph died, and other kings came onto to Egypt throne.  In time Joseph was forgotten about.  One day a new king was on the throne of Egypt who knew nothing at all about Joseph and what he had done.
Let’s read our lesson and see what this new king did.

Lesson:
The Israelite people were living in Egypt, and the new king of Egypt became afraid of the Israelite people, for there were so many of them.  This king said that he had to put a stop to the Israelites people having so many children.  You see this new king was afraid that if a war started, the Israelites would join Egypt enemies and fight against them.  Then the Israelite people would be able to escape from Egypt.

Do you know what this new king of Egypt did?  He made the Israelite people slaves!  The Egyptians put cruel slave masters over the Israelite people.  Their job was to wear the Israelites out with lots of hard work.  The Israelites was forced to build cities, and supply centers for the king.  They had to make bricks and mortar and work long hours in the fields.

One day Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order, he told the Hebrew midwives to kill all of the Israelite boys as soon as they were born, but they could let the girls live.  But the midwives feared God, and they refused to obey the king of Egypt and the midwives let the boys and girls both live.

The king called the midwives and asked them why they had let the baby boys live!    The midwives said that the Hebrew women were very strong and they couldn’t get there before the baby was born.  So God blessed the midwives with children, and the Israelites people grew in number and they became more powerful.

Then Pharaoh gave a new order to the Egyptian people, “Throw all the newborn Israelite baby boys into the Nile River.  But let the baby girls live.

It was during this time, that a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married.  After awhile the woman had a son, she saw what a beautiful baby he was and kept him hidden for three months.  But when she could no longer hide him, she got a little basket made of papyrus reeds and water proofed the basket with tar.  The woman then put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the edge of the Nile River.  The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to her brother.

Pretty soon one of Pharaoh’s daughters came down to the Nile River to take a bath, and her servant girls walked along the riverbank.  When the princess saw the little basket in the reeds, she told one of her servant girls to go and get it for her.  As the princess opened the basket, she found the baby boy.  His helpless cries touched her heart.  The princess knew that the baby had to be one of the Hebrew children, but she had fallen in love with the baby.

Then the baby’s sister came up to the princess.  She asked the princess if she should go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for the princess.  The princess told the girl,”Yes! Do so! “ The girl rushed home and told her mother and her mother then went to see the princess.  The princess told the baby mother to take the baby home and take care of him for her.  And the princess told the mother that she would pay her for her help.

Later on when the baby was older, the baby’s mother took the child back to the princess.  The princess raised the child as her own son, and named him Moses.

The Tower of Babel

The lesson is taken from Genesis 11:1-9
This story tells us why there are different languages in the world today. For before this happened everyone spoke the same language. But God in his wisdom decided that the people of earth needed to talk in different languages. Let's read and find out how it all came about.

Long ago the people traveled from the east and they found a plain. A plain is flat level ground. This plain was in the land of Shinar (Shi-nar), and the people settled there. Soon they begin to talk about building a city and building a tall tower. They knew how to make brunt bricks and they had tar for mortar to go between the bricks. They thought that by doing this they could make a name for their selves and they wouldn't be spread in all different directions upon the earth, they could stay together.

So they started to build a city and a tower. The tower top was to reach into heaven.

Now the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that the people were building. But the Lord said, "Look, the people are as one, for they all speak the same language, and this is what they begin to do, now nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Let us go down and give them different languages. Then they won't be able to understand each other."

In this way the Lord spread the people in different directions all over the earth. That ended the building of the city. That is why the city was called Babel. Because it was there that the Lord gave the people different languages so they couldn't understand what each other was saying, and the Lord sent the people in different direction all across the earth.
