Jesus and the Samaritan Woman

This story is taken from John 4:1-30 and John 4:39-42
The story is made into a play in the hope that the play would help the story to be better understood.

Teacher:  Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that He was baptizing people and that he was making more disciples than John, though Jesus Himself didn’t baptize the people, His disciples did all the baptizing.  So Jesus and His disciples left Judea and started back to Galilee.  They had to go through the country of Samaria on their way back to Galilee.  Eventually they came to a Samaritan village.  Now this village was near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.  This was where Jacob’s well was at.  It was about noon and Jesus being tired from the long walk, decided to sit down beside the well.  Jesus was now alone, all by His self, for His disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.  Soon a Samaritan woman came to the well to draw some water.

Jesus:  Please, give me a drink of water.

Teacher:  The woman was surprised that Jesus had spoken to her, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with the Samaritan people.  So, she said to Jesus.

Samaritan Woman:  You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman.  Why are you asking me for a drink of water?

Jesus:  If you only knew the gift that God has for you, and who it is that you are talking to.  Then you would ask me about the gift, and I would give you living water.

Samaritan Woman:  Sir, you don’t have a rope, or a bucket, and this well is very deep.  Where would you get this living water from?  And besides, do you think that you are greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well?  How can you offer me better water than he, his sons, and his animals had to drink?

Jesus:  Anyone who drinks the water from this well, will soon become thirsty again.  But anyone who drinks the water that I give them, they will never be thirsty again.  For it will become like a fresh, bubbling spring within them.  For this living water will give them eternal life.

Samaritan Woman:  Please, sir, give me this living water.  Then I will never be thirsty again, and I wouldn’t have to come here to Jacob’s well to get water to drink.

Jesus:  Go and get your husband

Samaritan Woman:  But sir, I don’t have a husband.

Jesus:  You’re right!  You don’t have a husband!  For you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now.  You certainly have spoken the truth!

Samaritan Woman:  Sir, you must be a prophet.  So tell me, why is it that the Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place to worship God, while we Samaritans claim it is here where our ancestors worshiped Him?

Jesus:  Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter if you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem.  You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while the Jews know all about Him, for salvation comes through the Jews.  But the time is coming!  Indeed it’s here already, when true worshipers of God will worship the Father in spirit and in truth.  The Father is looking for people who will worship Him this way.  For you see, God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.

Samaritan Woman:  I know the Messiah is coming.  He is the one who is called Christ.  When He comes, He will explain everything to us.

Jesus:  I am the Messiah!

Teacher:  Just then Jesus’ disciples came back from the nearby village where they had gone to buy food.  They were shocked to find Jesus talking with a woman.  But, none of the disciples had the nerve to ask Jesus, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?”  The woman left her water jar beside the well and she ran back to the village.  She was telling everyone,

Samaritan Woman:  Come and see a man who has told me everything I ever did!  Could this man possibly be the Messiah?

Teacher:  So the people made their way from the village to see Jesus.  Many Samaritan people from the village believed in Jesus because of what the Samaritan woman told them.

Samaritan Woman:  He told me everything that I ever did!

Teacher:  When the people came out to see Jesus, they begged him to stay in their village.  So Jesus stayed for two days, with them.  That was long enough for many more people to hear Jesus’ message and begin to believe.  Then the Samaritan people said to the woman.

Samaritan people:  Now we believe!  Not just because of what you told us.  But because we have heard Him for ourselves!  Now we know that He is indeed the Savior of the world!

Teacher:  Well, that’s our lesson story.  I hope you enjoyed it.
