This lesson is taken from Genesis 18:1-15 and Genesis 21:1-7
The
Lord appeared again to Abraham near an oak grove. One day Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent during
the hottest part of the day. When he
looked up, he noticed 3 men standing nearby.
He ran to them to greet them and to welcome them to his camp. When he
got to the men he bowed low to the ground.
Abraham said, “My Lord, if it pleases you, stop here for a while, and
rest in the shade of this tree while water is brought to wash your feet. And since you have honored your servant with
this visit, let me prepare some food for you, before you continue on your
journey.” They agreed, so Abraham ran
back to the tent and said to Sarah, “ Hurry!
Get 3 large measures of your best flour, mix it into dough, and bake
some bread.” Then Abraham ran out to
the herd and he chose a tender calf and gave it to his servant, who quickly
prepared it. When the food was ready,
Abraham took some yogurt and milk and the roasted meat, and he served it to the
men. As they ate, Abraham waited on
them in the shade of the trees.
“Where
is Sarah, your wife? The visitors
asked. Abraham told them that Sarah was
in the tent. Then one of them said, “I
will return to see you about this time next year, and your wife, Sarah, will
have a son!”
Sarah
was listening to them talk from the entrance to the tent, which was behind
him. Abraham and Sarah were both old
by this time, and Sarah was long past the age for having children. So she laughed silently to herself as she
thought, “after all these years, will I now have a child, now that I am so very
old?”
Then
the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh? Why did she say, will I really have a child, now that I am so
old? Is anything too hard for the Lord
to do? I will return about this time
next year, and Sarah will have a son.
Sarah was afraid, so she lied to the Lord. For she said, “I didn’t laugh!”
But the Lord knew better than that, and he said, “Yes, you did laugh.”
The
Lord kept His word to Sarah, and she had a son. This happened at the time God said it would happen. Abraham named
their son Isaac. Abraham was 100 years
old when Isaac was born. Sarah said,
“God has brought me laughter. All who
hear about this will laugh with me. I
have given Abraham a son in his old age!”
