Chapter 3 Ruth at the Threshing Floor

One day Naomi said to Ruth, “My daughter, it’s time that I find a permanent home for you, that way you will be provided for.  Boaz is a close relative of ours, and he has been very kind to us by letting you pick-up grain with his workers.  Tonight Boaz will be sorting the barley getting rid of the useless parts at the threshing floor.”  Now a threshing floor is the place where people go to beat out the grain from it’s husk.

Naomi also said to Ruth, “Now do as I tell you, go take a bath and put on some perfume and dress in your nicest clothes.  Then go to the threshing floor, but don’t let Boaz see you until he has finished his meal.  Be sure to notice where he lies down at, then go and uncover his feet and lie down there at his feet.  He will tell you what to do.”  “I will do everything you have said,” Ruth told Naomi.  Ruth went down to the threshing floor that night and followed what her mother-in-law told her to do.

After Boaz had finished his meal and was in good spirits, he lay down beside the heap of grain and he went to sleep.  Then Ruth came quietly over to him and she uncovered his feet, and lay down at his feet.  Around midnight, Boaz suddenly woke up and turned over.  He was surprised to find a woman lying at his feet!  “Who are you?” Boaz demanded.   Ruth than said to him, “I am your servant Ruth.  Spread the corner of your blanket over me, for you are my family redeemer.”

Then Boaz said, “May the Lord bless you, my daughter!  You are showing more family loyalty now than ever before, for you are not running after a rich, or poor, younger man.  Now don’t worry about a thing, my daughter.  I will do whatever is necessary, for everyone in town knows you are an honorable woman.  But there is one problem.  While it is true that I am one of your family redeemers, there is another man who is more closely related to you than I am.  Stay here tonight, and in the morning I will talk to him.  If he is willing to redeem you, then let him marry you.  But if he is not willing, then as surely as the Lord lives, I will marry you!  Now lie back down until morning.”

So Ruth lay at Boaz’s feet until morning, then she got up before it was light enough for people to know who each other were.  For Boaz had told her that no one must know that a woman was there at the threshing floor.  After Ruth got up Boaz told her to bring her coat and spread it out.  Then Boaz measured out six scoops of barley into the coat and helped her put it on her back like a sack, so she could carry it.  Then Boaz returned to town.

When Ruth went back to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked her, “What happened, my daughter?”  Ruth told Naomi everything Boaz had done for her, and then she added, “He gave me these six scoops of barley and told me not to go back to my mother-in-law empty handed.”

Then Naomi told Ruth to be patient, until they heard what happened.  That Boaz wouldn’t rest until he had followed through with this, he will get it settled today.

Chapter 2 Ruth Works in Boaz’s Field

 This lesson is taken from Ruth chapter 2

Now there was a wealth and powerful man in Bethlehem whose name was Boaz.  He was a relative of Naomi’s husband.  One day Ruth said to Naomi, “Let me go out into the fields to gather the leftover grain behind anyone who will let me do it.”   So Naomi said to Ruth, “All right, my daughter, go ahead and pick-up the leftover grain.”

So Ruth went out to gather the grain behind the field workers.  As it happened, Ruth found herself working in a field that belonged to Boaz, which was a relative of her father-in-law.  While Ruth was in Boaz’s field, he arrived from Bethlehem at the field.  Boaz shouted a greeting to his workers, “May the Lord be with you!”  And the workers shouted back to Boaz, “May the Lord bless you!”

Then Boaz noticed Ruth, and he asked his foreman, “Who is that girl over there?”  His foreman told Boaz that the girl was the young woman that came from Moab with Naomi.  She asked this morning if she could pick-up grain behind the workers.  She has been hard at work ever since.  Except for the few minutes that she rested over in the shelter.

Boaz went over and said to Ruth, “Listen my daughter.  Stay right here with us when you are picking-up grain, don’t go to any of the other fields.  See which part of the field my workers are harvesting, and then follow them.  I have warned the young men to leave you alone.  When you get thirsty, help yourself to the water that has been drawn from the well.”

Ruth fell at Boaz feet and thanked him warmly and she said to him, “Why are you being so kind to me?  I am only a foreigner here.”  But Boaz told her that he knew that, but that he also knew about the love and the kindness that she had shown to her mother-in-law since the death of both of their husbands.  Also he had heard about how she had left her father and mother and her own land to live in Bethlehem among complete strangers. Then he said to her,  “May the Lord, the God of Israel, reward you.”

Ruth told Boaz that she hope to continue to please him.  That he had given her comfort by speaking so kindly to her.  But his workers were more worthy than she was.

When it was lunchtime Boaz told Ruth to come over to where he was and help herself to some of the food.  Also if she wanted to she could dip her bread in the wine.   So Ruth sat down with Boaz’s worker and he gave her some food.  But, he gave her more food than she could eat.

When Ruth went back to work again, Boaz gave orders to his young men to let Ruth pick-up the grain that is among the cut and tied up stalks of grain without stopping her.  Boaz also told his men to pull out some of the heads of barley from the tied up stalks of grain and drop them on purpose.  That way Ruth could pick them up.  The men weren’t to give Ruth a hard time about picking the grain up either.

Ruth picked-up barley in the field all day and when she beat out the grain that evening, she saw that she had about a half of a bushel.  Ruth carried it back into town and showed the grain to her mother-in-law, Naomi.  Ruth also gave her mother-in-law the food that she had left over from her lunch.  And Naomi become excited and said, “So much food!  Where did you pick-up all this grain today?  Where did you work at?  May the Lord bless the one who helped you today.”

So Ruth told her mother-in-law about the man in whose field she had worked, and that the man name was Boaz.  With that Naomi told Ruth, “May the Lord bless him!  He is showing kindness to us as well as to your dead husband.  That man is one of our closest relatives.”

Ruth then told Naomi that Boaz had told her to come back and work with his workers until the entire harvest was completed.  Naomi became very excited about that.  She told Ruth that is wonderful that Boaz told her that.  She should stay with Boaz’s workers through the whole harvest.  That it would be safe there for her, unlike it would be in other people fields.

Ruth worked alongside the women in Boaz’s fields and pick-up gain with them until the end of the barley harvest.  Then she worked with them through the wheat harvest, also.  But all the while she was working she lived with her mother-in-law.

Cain and Abel

This lesson is taken from Genesis 4:1-26

This lesson is about two of Adam and Eve’s son. 

When the boys grew up Abel became a shepherd, which is someone who raises sheep.  Cain became a farmer, which is someone who grows food from the ground.  When it came time for Cain to gather what he had planted he brought God an offering from what he had grown in his field.  But Abel, worshiped God, and he had faith in God, he brought several of his best lambs from his flock of sheep as an offering to God.  God accepted Abel’s offering, but God wouldn’t take Cain offering.  This made Cain very angry and sad.

God asked Cain, “Why are you so angry?  Why do you look so sad?  God told Cain that his offering would be accepted, if he would do his offering right.  But, if he refused to do his offering right, then he had better watch out.  For sin would be in his life and sin will destroy him.  That he must not let that happen.

Now the first murder in the world is about to happen.  Murder is a sin that God will punish you for.  For God doesn’t like murder.  So, let’s read on and see what happened and see what punishment that God gave.

Later on Cain asked his brother, Abel, to go into the field with him.  While they were in the field Cain attacked and killed his brother.  A little later on the Lord asked Cain, “Where is your brother?  Where is Abel?”  Cain answered the Lord with, “ I don’t know!  Am I to know where he is at all the time?”  But God said to Cain, “ What have you done?  Listen!  Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground!  You are now to leave here, and you will not return to the land that you have made dirty with your brother’s blood.  No longer will the land give you plenty of crops, no matter how hard you work!  From now on you will be a person wandering about on the earth.  You will keep on the go, going from place to place.”

Then Cain said to God, “My punishment is too great for me to bear!  You have made me leave my land and leave your presence.  You have made me a wandering person, one who is on the go all the time.  And anyone who sees me will try to kill me.”

But, the Lord said, “They will not kill you, for I will give anyone who tries to kill you seven times the punishment that I have given you.”  Then the Lord put a mark on Cain as a warning to anyone who might try to kill him.  So Cain left God’s presence and settled in the land of Nod, which is east of Eden.  The word Nod means “Wandering.”

In time Adam and Eve had another son, which they named Seth.  Eve was happy and said, “God has given me another son in the place of Abel, the one Cain killed.”

Chapter 1 Ruth and Naomi Return to Bethlehem

This lesson is taken from Ruth, chapter 1

In the days when judges ruled in Israel, a man moved from Bethlehem in the land of Judah.  He left his country because of a very bad famine.  The word famine means there was no food.  The man took his wife and their two sons and went to live in the country of Moab.  The man wife’s name was Naomi.  The man, his wife, and their two sons were Ephrathites.  Just like in the United States we are known as Americans.

The man died and left Naomi with her two sons.  Her sons married Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth.  The name Ruth means friendship or companion.  About 10 years later both of Naomi’s sons died.  This left her alone, without her husband or her sons.  Then Naomi heard that the Lord had blessed his people in Judah by giving them good crops again.

Naomi decided that the best thing for her to do, now that she had no husband or sons, was to go back to Judah where she had relatives.  Naomi and her daughter-in-laws got ready to leave Moab and return to Naomi homeland.  They set out from where they had been living, and they took the road that would lead them back to Judah.

 

On the way, Naomi told her daughter-in-laws, “Go back to your mothers’ homes, instead of coming with me.  May the Lord reward you for your kindness to your husband and me.  And may the Lord  bless you with another marriage.”  Then Naomi kissed her daughter-in-laws good-bye.  They all broke down and cried.  But Naomi daughter-in-laws told Naomi that they wanted to go with her to her people. 

But Naomi told them, “Why should you go with me?  At my age I can’t have other sons, who would grow up to be your husband’s.  No, daughters return to your own parents’ homes, for I am too old to marry again.  Even if I were to get married tonight and have sons, then what would you do?  Would you wait for them to grow up and refuse to marry anyone else?  No!  Of course you wouldn’t.  Things are far worst for me than they are for you, because the Lord himself has caused my pain.”

Again they all cried together, and Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-by.  But Ruth had made up her mind and she was going to stay with Naomi.  But, Naomi tried to talk Ruth out of staying with her.  But Ruth refused to return to her parents’ house.  Instead Ruth told Naomi, “Don’t ask me to leave you and turn back.  I will go wherever you go and live wherever you do.  Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God.  I will die where you die and I will be buried there.  May the Lord punish me terribly if I allow anything but death to separate us!”

 

When Naomi saw that Ruth had made up her mind to go with her, she stopped trying to get Ruth to return to her own parent’s home.  So Ruth and Naomi continued on their journey.  When they came to Bethlehem, it was the beginning of the barley harvest, and the entire town seen them arrive.

The women of Bethlehem asked, “Is that really Naomi?”  But Naomi wanted the women to call her Mara, for she said, the Almighty God had made my life very bitter, I went away with a full life ahead of me, but the Lord has brought me home empty, for my husband and sons are now dead.
