Chapter 4 -- God's Covenant With Noah

Taken from Genesis 9:1-17

God blessed Noah and his family and told them to have many children and fill the earth with people.  Then God said, "All the wild animals, large and small, and all the birds and fish will be afraid of you.  I have placed all the animals in your power.  I have given then to you for food, just as I have given you grain and vegetables for food.  Remember you must never eat raw meat, you must cook it.  Remember also, that murder is forbidden.  Any animal that kills a person must die, and any person who murders another person must be killed for their crime.  For it is a sin to kill a person, for all people are made in God's image.

Then God told Noah and Noah's sons, "I am making a promise to you and your descendants." The word descendants means your children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and on down the line.  Then God said, "I am also making a promise with the animals and the birds and all of their descendants.  I solemnly promise never to send another flood to kill all living creatures and destroy the earth.  I am giving you a sign as proof of my eternal promise with you and all the living creatures.  I have placed my rainbow in the clouds.  When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow will be seen in the clouds.  And I will remember my promise with you and with everything that lives and I will never again send a flood that will destroy all life.

Now you know the meaning of the rainbow that you see in the sky.

Chapter 3 -- The Flood Recedes

Taken from Genesis 8:1-23

God remembered Noah and his family, and all the animals in the ark.  God sent a wind to blow across the water and the flood waters began to disappear.  The streams of underground waters stopped flowing and the heavy rain stopped.  So the flood waters slowly began to run off of the earth.  After 150 days from the time the flood began, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.  Two and one half months later as the water kept going down, other mountain tops began to appear.

After another 40 days, Noah opened the window in the ark and he released a Raven.  But, the raven didn't come back, it flew back and forth in the sky until the earth was dry.  Then, Noah sent out a Dove to see if it could find dry ground.  But, the Dove couldn’t found any place to land, because the water was still too high.  So, the Dove returned to the ark.   Noah held out his hand and he brought the Dove back inside the ark.  Seven days later, Noah sent out the Dove again.  This time toward evening the Dove returned to Noah with a fresh olive leaf in it mouth.  Noah now knew that the water was almost gone.  A week later Noah sent out the Dove again, and this time the Dove didn’t come back.

Two more months went by, and at last the earth was dry.  Then God said to Noah, "Leave the ark, all of you.  Turn loose all the animals and the birds."  So Noah and his family left the ark, and all the different kinds of animals and birds came out of the ark in pairs (male and female) side by side of the same kind.

Then Noah built an altar and worshipped the Lord.  This pleased the Lord and he said, "I will never again destroy all living things with a flood, even though people's thoughts and actions are turned toward evil from childhood.  As long as the earth remains, there will be spring and fall, winter and summer, cold and heat, day and night they will continue.

Chapter 2 -- The Flood Covers the Earth

Taken from Genesis 7:1-24

Noah has finished building the ark, and now the day has finally came when God said to Noah, "Take your family and go into the ark.  For from all the people on the earth, you alone are righteous, the one who worships and obeys me.  I want you to take along seven pairs, male and female, of each animal and bird that I have said was alright for eating, and for sacrifices.  And take one pair, male and female, of each of the other animals and birds.  There must be a male and a female in each pair to be sure that every kind of living creature will live through the flood.  For one week from today the rain will begin.  It will rain for 40 days and 40 nights.  And I will wipe from the earth all the living things I have created."

Noah did exactly as the Lord told him to do.  Noah was 600 years old when the flood started.  Noah went into the ark with his wife, their sons, and his son's wives to escape the flood.  With them were all the different kinds of animals, large and small, and the birds that God told them to put in the ark.

One week later, the flood waters came and covered the earth.  The streams of underground waters broke loose on the earth, and the rain fell heavy from the sky.  It rained for 40 days and 40 nights.  But Noah and all of his family, the animals, the birds, and the flying insects were all safe inside the ark.  For you see God had shut the door of the ark, locking Noah and all of them inside the ark.  Everything that breathed air and lived on dry land died that was outside the ark.  The flood waters covered the earth for 40 days and 40 nights.  The flood waters lifted the ark high above the earth.  As water rose higher and higher above the ground, the ark floated safely on the surface of the water.  Finally the water covered even the highest mountains on the earth, standing more than 22 feet above the highest mountain top.  And the water covered the earth for 150 days.
